Lost in San Bernardino

This is Part 3

of

Subway Stories

This Part is all about the Customers.

Intro :

I had MANY customers in this busy Subway in San Bernardino California.

I really took care to make everyone’s orders right.

I would make Customers custom breads, cookies, sandwiches etc all exactly how they like it and with care and consideration.

If they wanted a bag of mayo, extra extra cheese, a bag of pickles, a wheat Italian cheese jalapeño bread, whatever they wanted.

I got to know MANY customers.

The Family with 8 Children who came after school at the start of my Shift had their sandwiches ready and all perfect before walking in the door. I gave them a tiny discount because they came every day and would order bigger meals for their Family.

The Shy Customers didn’t have to say a word after the first time they said it or in the note they wrote. I memorized it and got it ready for them right away.

The Parents with Hungry Children who can’t wait in line I would prep them a snack bag with veggies or pickles while they wait.

I remembered many customers times they would come in so no customers had any issues.

While I was at that Subway it got an award for best Customer Service from all the good reviews.

Memories of Customers range from Good to Haunting.

These 3 Haunting Stories are called

Lost in San Bernardino

Story 1

The Boy

One Day at work.

Myself and co-workers saw a four-door car pull-up. A good-looking car with a wealthy looking elderly couple driving. They were clearly frustrated as they stopped abruptly in front of the Subway.

The woman got out. Opened the back door and pulled out a young Boy. Possibly 18 or over but looked very young and mental age was young.

At the time, I didn’t see the movie and still haven’t but seen clips, so I would say closest he was like Leonardo Di Caprios character in the Gilbert Grape film.

So the woman drags the boy out and sits him in front of the Subway and throws a pillowcase with a few things in it at him then gets in car and the guy drives away quickly.

The boy was very confused.

He was there every day after that.

My co worker and I would give him food.

One day a Gang of Guys told him to go with them.

After that the Boy wasn’t the same.

When the gang dropped him off in front of the Subway the Boy was much dirtier and beaten up and was throwing up.

Ambulance came to get Him.

After that I didn’t see Him.

Wondered what happened to him.

Last I saw Him was Years later at a drive tru on Waterman Ave Churches Chicken

He was in just underwear wrapped in a dirty hospital sheet with scribbles all over him and a notebook with satan symbols all drawn in it.

Some people were making fun of Him and aggravating Him to attack them as they laughed as others looked horrified calling the police.

Story 2

The Girl

I remember when She showed up.

Blonde long hair.

Big smile.

But something was off.

She had a bit of money and held it seeming confident to buy Her Sandwich.

But underneath it was confusing what a Girl like Her was doing in a dangerous area all alone. Clearly new to the area and not having anywhere to go.

She ordered a cold cut sandwich, which I could tell She wanted warmed up but couldn’t afford it, so I warmed it anyways which helped Her feel a bit better, I could tell.

I felt bad because when I applied to Subway I remembered when I was barley 18 & pregnant with no money I wanted a Healthy Sandwich and I had never been to Subway but I heard the Sandwiches are $5 so I saved up $5 for a Sandwich on a very rainy day. I ordered a veggie sandwich with extra cheese and avocado. The workers wore lots of makeup and were very rude.

Then when time to pay it was well over $5.

I couldn’t pay.

The workers were very rude about it, laughing as I walked off into the rain hungry.

I made the Girls sandwich exactly as She liked it. Heated it extra for Her as She wanted. Added MANY veggies as well.

All as She asked.

Taking time to make Her Sandwich She opened up about being new to San Bernardino and trying to make Her way out to Los Angeles to be a model.

I gave her a discount so She can get a full meal. She walked to a table to eat happily.

She sat at the table for a bit looking confused about where She was going to go.

A guy walked into the Subway with his friends. They all were dressed up with chains.

They ordered sandwiches, and then sat around the Girl. They complimented the Girl on Her looks and style, and then they all laughed together. Even the Girl.

She ended up leaving with the guys.

Some time later She came in again with the boys dressed very provocatively.

Skin tight shirt with breasts hanging out and an extra short skirt and heels.

She smiles when She saw me.

I made Her Sandwich quick and with care as She said they were in a Hurry.

Her smile faded as She walked away.

I only saw Her one more time while I was there.

She walked in slowly with tattered clothes all dirty.

Hair messed up

& a far away stare in Her eyes.

She couldn’t say much & worked hard to smile at me before Her eyes went distant again.

I made Her Sandwich as She likes and put together Her meal.

She put some money down and walked off quickly towards the guys outside with angry faces.

Story 3

The Couple

There was an old woman who would come around the same time every day.

I am night shift so I would come in mid day. She would come around then or a bit later sometimes earlier.

She always ordered the same thing.

A simple tuna sandwich.

A drink.

& chocolate chip cookies.

She would come in quite serious.

Sadly often left upset when there were no cookies or bad cookies.

The Subway was always busy so cookies went quick when day shift decided to bake them.

Usually I would see Her while coming in and She will either be sitting in the back or looking at the back table then walk out upset.

Otherwise She may have come early or coming in soon after me.

I’d put in cookies and help with the line, then by the end of the first rush, cookies are done. Then, I’d keep the best chocolate chip cookies for the Old Woman.

One day, as I was coming in, the Old Woman was going down the long line, obviously frustrated.

As She got close to the register, She saw how empty and dirty the cookie display was, and she flipped.

She only ever wanted the same thing and nothing else, and if we didn’t have what She wanted, then the whole meal was ruined.

The Old Woman looked at the dirty table in the back and angrily stormed out.

“Whats up with Her ?” – One worker said.

“She used to come in with Her Husband all the time before He died. They would sit at that table together. She now comes in every day and orders their meal still.” – The day manager said.
